DIY Beauty | Organic Lip Balm

One beauty product I can’t do without is lip balm, I’m never without lip balm. Although I’m stepping up my green beauty game this year, the synthetic ingredients in commercial lip balm have always concerned me because we consume whatever it contains with every lick of our lips. I’ve had to stop using Burt’s Bees after discovering I’m allergic to beeswax, and while I love C.O. Bigelow’s Mentha Ultra Lip Shine for its taste & shine, I’m definitely not crazy about the ingredients, so tonight I decided to try making my own lip balm & I’m so glad I did!
Now, I can’t take credit for this wonderful recipe – it’s courtesy of the eco-fabulous and always chic Francesca of Hey Fran Hey fame! I’ve followed her social media sites for a while now & absolutely love the tips, recipes and tutorials she shares with her readers. She’s a great resource for how to eat clean, beautify green and workout lean without breaking the bank or bulking up, always stylish and feminine. I definitely suggest checking out her website. 🙂
Okay, so here’s how I made raw & organic lip balm. Btw, I slightly tweaked Fran’s recipe by using Candelilia Wax in place of Beeswax & a little Peppermint Extract for flavor, but the rest is the same.

What I Used:
- Raw & Organic Cocoa Butter to keep lips soft
- Raw & Organic Shea Butter to help lips maintain moisture throughout the day
- Candelilla Wax {in place of beeswax} – to bond all the ingredients together
- Unrefined, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil also acts to support moisture and helps to seal the application eliminating the need to constantly reapply
- Jamaican Black Castor Oil provides an all-natural gloss & shine
- Pyrex Measuring Cup is used to hold all the ingredients. Simply place the cup in a pot of boiling water until everything melts into a liquid. The cup prevents the ingredients from sticking to the pot making for a much neater, cleaner & faster process.
- Grater to grate the Butters which reduces the heating time, ensuring the nutrients remain {too much heat can destroy them}.
The Steps
- Grate 1 oz or 2 Tablespoons Cocoa Butter {see below}

- Organic Shea Butter is too soft to grate so I sliced off 2 Tablespoons & dropped it into the measuring cup.

- Add 2 Tablespoons of Candelilla Wax into the measuring cup.

- Add 1 Tablespoon of Coconut Oil.

Sorry for this pic, I use a lot of Virgin Coconut Oil so the container is a tad oily..lol
- Add 1 Tablespoon of Jamaican Black Castor Oil.

- I added a few drops of Pure Peppermint Extract for taste.

- Boil 2 cups of water and place the Pyrex Measuring Cup in the center of the pot. After a minute or two, stir to help the ingredients melt faster.

- Be sure to remove the measuring cup using a pot holder, place it to the side & allow to cool for a few minutes.

- Now the finished product is ready to pour into lip balm tubes or containers. I found these cool black tubes on eBay for a steal – 25 tubes for only $9 S/H included.

- Allow the lip balm to cool for 15-20 minutes. I used the time to wash several tubes in preparation, surprisingly that small amount filled up eight tubes with a smidge left over.
The Final Product

I really love the finished product, especially because it was my first attempt which can be a hit or miss, ya just never know. But it’s a little minty, has great slip & immediately softened my lips. Plus, it took less than an hour from start to finish & now I have enough tubes to last months, though I plan to try a few other wax alternatives I’ve read about. The beau just swiped his tube and gave me a thumbs up….man-approved… 🙂

Thanks Sheree! There are so many ways to make your own & it definitely outweighs the costs and quality of commercial options. Let me know if you make any. : )
hey, let me buy a tube from you. i would love to give it a try.
Hi Yolanda,
Thanks for visiting my blog. I love that you’re interested in trying my creation, though I love the results, this first batch isn’t quite minty enough so I’m going to give it another go trying a different wax alternative. If you’d still like to buy one, shoot me an e-mail & I’ll keep you posted!

Just read an interesting article on JBCO, so I googled to see if I could find a recipe useing it for Lipbalms and found yours. Gonna try it as soon as I send for some more JBCO. I am hoping to do a small community intro to my products in the summer and I read you would sell your Lipbalms. Would u mind taking the time to let me know how much you charge for yours? I have no idea what would be a good price for DIY stuff. Thankyou for this recipe, can hardly wait to get started.
Thank you, Roberta Herrera.
PS. I’m betting that you have a name other than suite7beauty talk? LOL
