A few weeks ago, I decided to try making my own mouthwash because I can’t stand the taste-bud killing, high alcohol content of store-bought brands. Not to mention, commercial mouthwash products tend to not only kill the bad bacteria, but also the good kind that keeps your mouth fresh & protects pearly whites from tooth decay.
Did You Know?
The high alcohol content in popular commercial brands used to break up plaque deposits also enables the other ingredients to penetrate better, but what good is that if it also completely destroys the mucous coating that keeps your mouth moist & washes away harmful bacteria that causes bad breath & cavities? Once the bad bacteria outweighs the good, hello tooth decay & other problems! Let’s not get started on the medical debates about whether certain ingredients cause oral cancers. Add to this, the acidity levels that lead to enamel & mineral erosion which can make teeth more sensitive to hot & cold temps while on the road to tooth decay, and the result is one chaotic concoction. Seems for every good thing it does, there’s a negative action too…. who needs it!
So here’s a super simple, DIY Antiseptic Mouthwash recipe:
Combine 1 cup water, 3 drops Peppermint Essential Oil and 1 teaspoon Baking Soda. Mix the ingredients together in a jar [glass is suggested] and shake it up well. Pour a little into a Dixie cup {I use a shot glass}, swish in your mouth & spit it out. Viola! Fresh breath sans the unwanted side-effects & questionable ingredients. Store the rest on your bathroom counter & make more as needed.
I’ve used this recipe for the last two weeks & I’ll definitely be making more when I run out.
