It’s been a busy few days. I’m terribly sleepy as I type so please excuse any typos, but I wanted to share an interesting article I read today.
In the article, Sharon Virts Moser explains why she’s given hundreds of high school grads a true career path and has no plans to stray from this method. Sharon is the CEO of FCi Federal, a company that provides back-office support for federal agencies. While we all know a college degree has its value, Sharon doesn’t overestimate its power, stating 95% of her employees are not college educated and its working out just fine.
Having worked for a major telecommunications corporation for 15 years, I can attest to her belief. A college degree had no bearing on the productivity, professionalism, performance or promotability of most employees within the company. Our demographic consisted of varying educational backgrounds ranging from high-school to Ivy League alumni, spread throughout the different business channels. There were Regional Vice Presidents who worked their way up from the mail room and most supervisors from entry-level positions so the work was the final litmus test, not the background.
By the way, FCi Federal is a company that generates $70 million in revenue annually so it’s certainly no slouch in the projected growth department despite the economy. Considering they started in 2007 with an annual revenue of only $2 million, that’s quite an increase in only five years.
I’ve included the link to the article above. 🙂
So anyway, why am I so sleep deprived? Two words: Social Media. I’m working on a new project and since it’s just me, I’m responsible for everything, E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G. If I were a big name or working with a major budget, I’d hire a major company like Triangle Direct Media to do all this for me, everything from marketing to SEO and overall strategy but again, just me, for now anyway… okay off to pass out…
I like that. High school degrees should not be put down because people who worked hard in high school will most likely work hard in universities… coming out the same hard working person whether they went to college or started a job. In my case, I have a university degree that has not been helping me one bit 😛 I feel sad.
Awww, that sucks but I understand how you feel. I know several others in the same boat. If only a college education was considered a right as opposed to a privilege, so many bear the burden of student loans long after school is done and without earning the income they expected to see with their degrees. It’s hard.
